Fort Apache commissary ledgers, 1875-1883.

Summary: Commissary ledgers listing, by individual, the goods purchased by post employees for 1875, and 1877 to 1882. The individuals are mostly officers of the 6th Cavalry but others are also represented. Names include Lt. Gatewood, Lt. Stanton, Lt. Cruse, Lt. Dravo, Col. E.A. Carr, and Lt. Kerr. The goods purchased include dried apples, sugar, butter, corn meal, rice, thread, pipe stems, towels, combs, and brushes. There is also a summary ledger, dated November 1880 to May 1883, that contains total amounts of food and other supplies issued and sold. The summary is broken into categories of regulars, Indian scouts, civilian employees, friendly Indians, officers and enlisted men.

The 6th Cavalry was constituted in the regular army as the 3rd Cavalry in May 1861. In Aug. 1861 it was redesignated as the 6th Cavalry and called the "Fighting Sixth." Historical note: Fort Apache was established in 1870; after undergoing several name changes it was named Fort Apache in April 1879.
